Nothing Like a Well Timed 'Dude, You Stink'" by aaron donley

I talk to the homeless.
Not as the casual observer
or guilt ridden giver,

-but as a real human being.

If I see a group of my homeless friends standing around in a circle
I may walk by and say,
“What’s up losers?”

The exact same phrase I would use
if passing by some friends of my own
who were dressed poorly and standing in a circle.

“You’re disgusting,” I say to one.

“Why don’t you get a job?”
-An honest question is presented to another.

I feel they appreciate my candor and level-playing field talk.

“Man, someone stole all my gear under the bridge last night,”
George complained
to
me
one
morning
in passing. “

Well,” I replied,
“that’s because you are under a bridge.
If you lived in a house
that
might
not
happen
as frequently.”

George nods.

I continue,
“And let’s back up for a second
-and speak of said gear.

Isn’t it really just…
garbage?”

“To some,” George complies,
“to some.”

Occasionally some faux do-gooder will confront me
on my manner of dealing
with

bums.

“How can you speak to these people like that?!

They are human beings
just like you and me!!!”

-Exactly.

(These people typically
give more to George,

and I expect a cut.)

  2. Some of them are really picky. They've turned down my food on more than one occassion.
